This is a stencil instrument produced by Malerne for Buffet’s second line of instruments, “Evette & Schaeffer,” likely in the 1960s or 70s. It is a well-made instrument made from quality materials and it has just been through the shop for a servicing to put it into good playing condition. It features all cork pads except for the lowest five, which are felt. A large topjoint crack has been properly pinned and is stable. The crack does not go through to the bore nor have any discernible affect on playing characteristics. The bore is clean, shiny, and scratch-free. This instrument features full conservatory keywork including left-F.
It has been paired with a J M Reinhardt silver-plated bocal that is well suited to the instrument. Typical of Malerne English horns, it plays with a broad, meaty tone, somewhat reminiscent of early Laubin English horns (which were also made by Malerne!) Despite the low price tag, this instrument is of good enough quality to be played in professional settings, and would be a great choice for an advancing student or woodwind doubler, or anyone else in need of a good English horn at a great price.
All used instrument purchases allow for a 7-day approval period, with buyer paying all shipping charges.
