The Stiletto Oboe Swab™ aims to be the best oboe swab available, incorporating all the benefits of both typical swabs and turkey feathers without the drawbacks of either one.
Traditional swabs, while they tend to remove water thoroughly, carry with them the the risk of getting stuck in the bore, particularly if the string breaks or if the swab becomes knotted, and the exposed metal weight can cause damage to the bore and/or reed socket if not used with utmost care. Additionally, swabs are prone to pushing dirt and debris into toneholes and octave vents, which can adversely affect the tone and function of the instrument over time. As a repair technician I can personally attest to the serious and senseless risks of traditional swabs, and thus, have avoided them whenever possible.
Turkey tail feathers have long been the “safe” alternative for cleaning/drying the oboe bore, as they are unlikely to get stuck or cause damage to the bore, however, feathers can leave behind fibers which can affect the oboe’s playability until they are removed, making them, particularly if worn out, a serious possible hazard to performers. I’ve heard of at least one concerto performance ruined by a stray feather particle stuck in the bore, though at least it can be said that the damage is not permanent. Feathers are also more geared to “spreading out” water rather than removing it or cleaning the bore, so they tend to result in the need for frequent use, compounding their durability problems. At up to $5 per feather from major double reed supply shops, and requiring frequent replacement, they are actually rather costly in the long run!
The Stiletto swab is based on the general idea of using a feather, but eliminates the drawbacks through its design and use of premium materials. A soft, lint-free, absorbent microfiber “blade” with a rigid spine is gently inserted into the bore and rotated using a small hardwood handle, removing water, rather than simply spreading it out, and gently cleaning the bore without significant risk of getting stuck or causing damage.
Stiletto swabs are offered in sets of two (one for each joint) or topjoint swabs can be purchased individually.
Instructions for use:
- Gently insert the Stiletto Swab into the bore from the bottom end until slight resistance is met, and twist at least 90 degrees. The goal should be for the tip of the swab to pass just slightly beyond the top of the bore into the reed or tenon socket.
- Do not force the swab into the bore farther than necessary. As this puts unnecessary pressure on the top of the bore. The dimensions of the swab have been carefully designed to prevent the need for forceful swabbing!
- The microfiber fabric is highly absorbent and fast drying. It is best to allow it to dry in open air between uses for best results.
- Never store your Stiletto Swab inside the bore of your instrument!
- If your Stiletto Swab becomes dirty over time, gently clean the surface with a damp (not soaking wet) sponge or cloth, and allow it to air dry.
- Discontinue use of the swab if by some chance the microfiber wears through, exposing the spine. While there is minimal risk of bore damage even in this case, as there are no sharp edges even internal, caution is warranted.
